Motor Insurance Hidden Traps in the UAE: What Your Policy Doesn't Cover

You have comprehensive insurance. You think everything is covered. Then you have an accident and discover your policy has 15 pages of exclusions you never read. Here are the most common traps in UAE motor insurance policies.

1. Agency Repair vs Non-Agency Repair

This is the single biggest trap in UAE motor insurance. "Comprehensive" does not automatically mean agency repair. Many policies default to non-agency (third-party garage) repair, which means your brand-new car gets fixed at an independent workshop, not the authorised dealer.

Agency repair typically costs AED 200-500 more in annual premium but saves you thousands in repair quality and resale value. Some policies offer agency repair for the first 2-3 years only, then automatically switch to non-agency.

What to check: Search your policy for "agency repair," "authorised dealer," or "workshop network." If it says "repairer of the Company's choice," that means non-agency.

2. Depreciation on Parts

When your insurer replaces parts, they may apply depreciation. If your car is 3 years old and needs a new bumper, the insurer may only pay 70% of the cost — you pay the other 30% out of pocket. This is legal and common in the UAE.

Look for "zero depreciation" or "new-for-old" coverage as an add-on. It typically costs AED 100-300 extra per year but eliminates out-of-pocket costs on parts replacement.

3. Geographic Limitations

Most UAE motor insurance policies cover the UAE only. If you drive to Oman (a common weekend trip from Dubai and Abu Dhabi), you may not be covered unless you purchased a specific Oman extension. The same applies to driving through Saudi Arabia to Bahrain or Qatar.

Some policies cover GCC countries but exclude certain territories or require advance notification. Check the "territorial limits" section of your policy before any cross-border trip.

4. Named Driver Restrictions

Some policies only cover named drivers listed on the policy. If your spouse, friend, or employee drives your car and has an accident, the claim may be denied. Other policies restrict drivers by age (under 25 excluded) or by licence type (international driving licence not covered).

What to check: Search for "authorised driver," "named driver," "any driver," or "age restriction." The safest option is "any driver with valid UAE licence."

5. The Deductible You Did Not Notice

Every claim has a deductible (excess). In the UAE, this ranges from AED 0 to AED 2,500 depending on the policy. Cheaper premiums often come with higher deductibles. A policy that costs AED 500 less per year but has a AED 1,500 deductible means you pay AED 1,500 out of pocket on every claim.

Some policies also have a separate, higher deductible for drivers under 25, or for accidents that occur at night, or during adverse weather conditions.

6. Personal Accident Cover Limits

Comprehensive motor insurance covers the car. It does not always cover the people inside. Personal accident cover for driver and passengers is often an add-on, not included by default. Check the "Personal Accident" section — if it exists, check the per-person limit. AED 200,000 is standard but some policies cap it at AED 50,000, which barely covers a hospital stay in Dubai.

7. Total Loss and Insured Declared Value (IDV)

If your car is totalled, the insurer pays the Insured Declared Value (IDV), not the market value and not what you paid. IDV depreciates every year. A car you bought for AED 150,000 two years ago may have an IDV of AED 100,000 — that is what you get if it is written off.

Check the "total loss" definition as well. Some policies declare total loss at 50% of repair cost vs car value. Others at 60% or 75%. This determines whether your car is repaired or written off.

8. Off-Road and Parking Exclusions

Drive your SUV into the desert? Many policies exclude damage that occurs off paved roads. Flood damage from leaving your car in a basement parking during heavy rain? Some policies exclude natural disaster damage. Theft from a non-secured parking area? May not be covered.
