Understanding Saudi Labour Law for Employees

Saudi Labour Law (Royal Decree No. M/51, issued under Council of Ministers Resolution No. 219) governs all employment relationships in the Kingdom. Whether you are a Saudi national or an expatriate worker, your employment contract must comply with these regulations — and any clause that reduces your statutory rights is void.

Key protections include limits on probation periods (Article 53), mandatory notice periods for termination (Article 75), working hour limits including special Ramadan provisions (Articles 98-101), and end-of-service gratuity entitlements (Articles 84-86). The law also regulates non-compete clauses, requiring them to be limited in duration, geography, and business scope (Article 83).

The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) enforces compliance. Employees can file complaints through the Musaned platform or directly at MHRSD labour offices. Disputes are resolved by Labour Courts under the Board of Grievances.
