How to Resign in the UAE: A Complete Guide
Resigning from a job in the UAE requires following specific procedures under Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021. The most critical requirement is providing written notice for the period specified in your employment contract — typically 30 days, though it can range from 14 to 90 days.
During the probation period (maximum 6 months), either party can terminate with 14 days written notice. If you resign without serving the full notice period, your employer can claim compensation equivalent to the salary for the unserved notice days.
Under the new UAE Labour Law, employees who resign with proper notice are entitled to full end-of-service gratuity, regardless of whether they initiated the termination. This is a significant change from the previous law, which reduced gratuity for employees who resigned before completing 5 years.
Your resignation should be submitted in writing — email is acceptable in most companies, but a printed and signed letter provides stronger documentation. Keep a copy for your records and request written acknowledgment of receipt.
After your last working day, your employer must cancel your visa within 14 days and pay your final settlement within 14 days. The final settlement includes unpaid salary, accrued leave, gratuity, and any other contractual entitlements.
