Understanding Your UAE Employment Rights
The UAE Labour Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021) introduced significant changes to employment regulations, including the mandatory conversion of all unlimited contracts to fixed-term contracts, updated notice period rules, and clearer non-compete guidelines.
Every employee in the UAE is entitled to end-of-service gratuity after completing one year of continuous service. The gratuity is calculated based on basic salary only — housing, transport, and other allowances are excluded from the calculation.
Non-compete clauses must be reasonable in scope, duration (maximum 2 years), and geography. UAE courts have consistently struck down overly broad non-compete provisions. If your contract contains a non-compete, have it reviewed before signing.
All salaries must be paid through the Wage Protection System (WPS). If your employer asks you to sign for a lower salary than what you actually receive, or pays part of your salary in cash, this is a violation that you can report to MoHRE.
